eclipse

Installation

Installing the latest version on Ubuntu

Get the latest version of Eclipse from the official https://www.eclipse.org/downloads and download it to your /tmp directory. If plan to write Java software and you do not know which variant to choose I recommend the JEE bundle since it contains a lot of useful additions over the plain Eclipse package.

Unpack Eclipse to /opt/eclipse:

cd /opt && tar xzvf /tmp/eclipse-jee-luna-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz
chown -R root:root /opt/eclipse

Creating a lauch configuration

Ubuntu uses .desktop files to define how an application is searched, launched and displayed by the Unity desktop.

echo '[Desktop Entry]
Name=Eclipse
Name[de]=Eclipse
GenericName=IDE
GenericName[de]=Entwicklungsumgebung
Type=Application
Categories=Development;IDE;Java;
StartupWMClass=Eclipse
Icon=/opt/eclipse/icon.xpm
Exec=/opt/eclipse/eclipse
' > ~/.local/share/applications/Eclipse.desktop

Under Ubuntu you install the .desktop file in the ~/.local/share/applications/ directory.

Installing the Java 8 JDK

Oracle Java 8

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
apt-get update
apt-get install oracle-java8-installer
