Secure Shell Daemon

The Secure Shell Daemon (sshd) is a server program that accepts secure remote logins via the Secure Shell protocol.

aptitude install openssh-server

I recommend that you disable password logins in /etc/sshd/sshd_config. Work with RSA keys instead.

PasswordAuthentication no

It is also a good idea to shift the ssh server away from the standard port 22 if the sshd faces the internet. That reduces the number of script attacks and keeps your logs cleaner.

If you want to automatically start the sshd then do the following.

update-rc.d ssh defaults

rc-update add ssh default
