Ubuntu 10.04.1

  • server install due to 5 years maintenance
  • uname -a = Linux Thinkpad-T60 2.6.32-26-generic-pae #47-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 17 16:14:46 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

cpu speed stepping

  • package: cpufreqd (powernowd would by also okay), gnome-applets includes nice panel icon
  • Problem: CPU remains on low frequency (check /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq)
  • solution: kernel option processor.ignore_ppc=1

fan control

  • package: thinkfan
  • enable software based fan control /etc/modprobe.d/my.conf line options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1
  • temperature thresholds /etc/thinkfan.conf
(0, 0, 44)
(1, 42, 46)
(2, 43, 49)
(3, 45, 53)
(4, 50, 59)
(5, 57, 64)
(7, 60, 32767)
  • cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan to see which level is active
  • note: but I don't know which sensor is really used. Sometimes it looks like thinkfan is using a average value of the existing sensors especially for level down steps

sensor applet

  • sensors: acpi, ibm-acpi and libsensors
  • use the fan and CPU temperatur value of ibm-acpi
  • note: use the value display to check the thinkfan control behaviour
  • libsensor: use temp11 for CPU temperature because it is closer to the thinkfan behaviour
  • hddtemp us much closer to the sensor applet shown values

  • package: pm-utils
  • works out of the box
  • speed stepping okay after resume
  • lid close okay

  • type: techsolo usb
  • cheese: works out of the box
  • skype: needs workaround
mv /usr/bin/skype /usr/bin/skype.bin
touch /usr/bin/skype
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/ /usr/bin/skype.bin
chmod +x /usr/bin/skype

Fist I tried a native alsa installation without additional sound systems like pulseaudio, esound, oss or others. But I had two major problems:

  • alsa volume control icon not possible in panel
  • micro not working in skype

Mplayer and audacious works well with alsa only. Then I came back and installed pulsaudio. The two problems are solved and the micro quality is much better than with alsa, especially the skype automatic level control.

  • using xserver-xorg-video-intel works out of the box
  • note: playing a little bit with different kernel versions sometimes xorg (using startx) won't work due to missing drm/dri load → thing it is a upstart problem

  • don't use the default gnome installation
  • following packages are bullshit: totem, pulseaudio, games, …

Login Console Switch problem

I sometimes have problems like:

  • startup remains at virtual console 7 and I must press ALT+F1 for console switch
  • if startup finished automatically at console 1 a got this error (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version. when starting X

Solution: I de-installed gdm but the init config /etc/init/gdm.conf was not removed. After rename to gdm.disabled all works as expected.
